Federal Budget dedicates $7.8 million for a child sex offender list – The search will be easy as a pin on a map

Apr 4, 2019 | Criminal Law, Miscellaneous

Australians will soon be able to search for local child sex offenders, see their photograph and details. The Federal budget has allocated 7.8 million for this initiative, and Australians will access a wealth of information.

This 2019-2020 budget will create an extensive National Public Register of Child Sex Offenders. The approach is simple: to create consistent access to information. The list will be so extensive that  the offenders date of birth, physical description, photograph and a general description of where they live and their offence will be made public.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission will manage the database with police agencies from each state producing the information.

In 2014 when having a sex register made public was raised, then prime minister Tony Abbott was opposed to the idea.

“We don’t have a national murderers register, we don’t have a national thieves register, we don’t have a national white collar criminals register. I am disinclined to single out particular crimes for particular public registers.” Tony Abbott.

This is what an Australian sex offender registry would look like
